The Major Bantam girls came away with a well deserved Bronze medal in the AAA division of the Kingston Impact Mega Tournament. The girls finished the weekend with a 4-1 record, including a victory over the eventual champions. On Friday night at Queen’s University, the girls took on the host, and eventual gold medal winners, the Kingston Impact U14. The girls aggressive style of defense and great intensity overcame the Impact’s great full court press and came away with a 32-22 victory.
Saturday morning the Blazers took on a AAA Montreal Wolves team. Despite giving up the most points in a game this season, the Blazers still outscored their opponents by 62-48 margin. In the afternoon, the Blazers went to 3-0 with a 48-36 win over Ottawa Shooting Stars U14.
Sunday morning they faced a team that needed to win to move on to the Gold medal game. Gloucester Wolverines came out fast and early and took it to the Blazers, handing the Brockville team their only loss of the tournament 46-24. The Blazers hadn’t lost a game by more than 4 all season so the girls had to re-focus and prepare to take on the scrappy Wolves team again in the Bronze game.
Despite a slow start and getting down 9-0, the bench came on to score the next 14 points and the team never looked back. All 12 girls scored in the game, and the fast break, post play and shooting helped them secure the 55-45 win.
